Installations

Although most of my work in glass has kept me in or very near the sandblast booth, I do enjoy every opportunity to “work in the field”. The locations where glass art goes also tend to be highly interesting in many other ways, and so it can be somewhat educational regarding interior design. It’s also good to just get out of the studio once in a while, but the main reason I like it is purely practical.

Not until it is finally installed is glass art in it’s fully finished form. That it is translucent means that characteristics of whatever environment it is in affects the glass in a big way. Glass Artists who only see the piece in the studio, can’t be sure how it ends up looking onsite for the customer. What if it looked great at the studio, and ends up not as great onsite? Having the opportunity to figure out why is invaluable for becoming a more knowledgeable artist. So, if the option to go is there, I go.

Opportunities to work with other glass artists seem most often to come in the form of installation. Many of the photos in this first slideshow are pictures fellow glass artists sent to me after I had helped them out.

New Stained Glass

New Stained GlassThis is something we’ve talked about doing for a long time… they are small hanging stained glass panels that are distinctly antique in style. We have three of them now hanging in a store down the road called “The Red Barn”.

I love the style that was occuring about 100 years ago in America. Of course there was a lot of diversity in that, and you can look at it as a blend of things like early deco, nouveau, prairy, etc. but really I find it quite recognizable as it’s own thing.

Stained Glass

samples of stained glassThings are getting exciting in the studio regarding stained glass. As a specialist in glass etching I have been kept busy with that pretty much my entire career. On occasion over the years though I have been able to sneak over often enough to become a proficient stained glass craftsman. We’ve had an opportunity recently to significantly expand our art-glass inventory to the point where I can now (for the first time really) build some serious windows.

Antique Style: UPDATED

stained glass windowThe Farm Cafe is a charming and romantic restaurant in Portland Oregon. The building is actually a converted late 19th century house that retains much of it’s original character.

The design for the windows are meant to blend with the decor including some actual antique windows already there.

UPDATE: Install on Tuesday was successful. The slideshow of the building process turned out quite nice (click on the image to the left).
